The Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center, located at 1249 Fifth Avenue @ 106th Street, houses many of the NYC Area’s major volunteer opportunities. TCC has a wide range of programs, including, among others, traditional nursing home services, rehabilitative and transitional care programs, an AIDS unit and a specialty unit devoted to severely disabled children. Members of the Order serve the facility as Eucharistic Ministers and Friendly Visitors, as well as escorting residents and patients to Sunday Mass. Several Members of the Order also serve as Members of the Board of the Catholic Health Care System, now Archcare.
Every Sunday at 9:15 am, you will find Members of the Order, auxiliary and candidates in preparation working together to assist residents of TCC to the 10:15 Sunday Mass. Volunteers are always welcome! After Mass, volunteers gather for bagels or donuts–and conversation.
At Thanksgiving, the NYC serves dinner to the residents. Thanksgiving dinner is usually scheduled for the Monday and Tuesday of the week prior to Thanksgiving. It is a festive event with food accompanied by conversation and music. Members look forward to participating in this event. At Christmas time, we also sponsor a party for the residents, serving desserts on a Sunday afternoon while residents await the arrival of Santa Claus. The NYC Area purchases, wraps, and distributes gifts to those attending the party.
On the first Saturday of each month, September through May, Members organize a Sing-Along for the severely disabled children living at TCC. Generally starts at 10:30 am and is over by 1:00 pm. A great singing voice is not required; merely a smile and enthusiasm!
In April of each year, we organize a Malta Circus for the children, complete with a circus parade, balloons, clowns and games.
