Father Joseph Johnson was born in Dallas, Texas. He studied History and Classics at The University of Texas at Austin. He first came to Minnesota to study Philosophy at The University of Saint Thomas. While there, he discerned his vocation to the priesthood and was accepted as a candidate for Holy Orders by the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.

Following his seminary studies in Rome, Father Johnson was ordained a priest in 1998. He served for three years as parochial vicar at St. Olaf parish in downtown Minneapolis. During that time, he was very active in Young Adult ministry and in working with the poor at Sharing and Caring Hands. He was then assigned by Archbishop Flynn to pursue advanced studies in Moral Theology in Rome. During that time he also worked extensively with the Missionaries of Charity and on the cause for canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

Upon his return to Minnesota, Father Johnson served for two years as the Assistant Chancellor of the Archdiocese. During that time he coordinated the Eucharistic Congress in celebration of the “Year of the Eucharist.” He also assumed the position of pastor of St. Vincent de Paul parish in Frogtown, serving the Hmong Catholic community. He continued to serve the Hmong Catholic community along with his appointment in June 2006 as the twenty first Rector of the Cathedral of Saint Paul, National Shrine of the Apostle Paul.
