American Association to Sponsor Member for Blessed Gerard Retreat

11/21/2018

The American Association will once again sponsor one Knight or Dame between the ages of 25 – 35 to attend the Order of Malta’s Blessed Gerard Retreat from February 13th – 17th, 2019. Those who attend will spend time in spiritual retreat, joined by the High Charges of the Order. Please see below for more information about the Blessed Gerard Retreat.

If you are interested in being considered for sponsorship (all expenses paid), please email mail@orderofmaltaamerican.org with your note of interest. President Peter J. Kelly, MD, KM, will announce the recipient of sponsorship after the holidays.

Please note that those not chosen to be sponsored by the American Association are more than welcome to attend the Blessed Gerard Retreat at their own expense.

Dear Confreres,

As you know, the Holy Father has asked us to reform the spiritual life of our Order. With this in mind, I am writing to inform you that the Blessed Gerard Retreat, which was started more than ten years ago, will take place once again from Wednesday, February 13th  to Sunday, February 17th, 2019.

The purpose of this meeting is twofold: it is a time of spiritual retreat, which also provides those who attend with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the charisms of the Order’s Family and of its Organs of Central Government. The previous structure of the Retreat was a combination of these two purposes in a mixed program which took place over four days. The meetings were held at the Magistral Villa at the Aventine and the participants all stayed in a nearby hotel.

Whilst I do think that both purposes should be maintained, I have decided that more emphasis needs to be put on the spiritual aspect of the event, so that it becomes a real Retreat rather than a Seminar. Participants will meet and get to know High Charges of the Order here in Rome but the most important element will be the time spent in spiritual retreat. This will allow these young people to familiarize themselves with the essentially religious nature of our Order’s family.

In view of the renewed nature of the meetings, I think it more appropriate if the Blessed Gerard Retreat be held in a Religious House, for a duration of four full days, as before, plus an afternoon. Holding the Retreat in such a place of reflection and prayer will provide the participants with a more fulfilling spiritual experience.

With confraternal wishes,

Frà Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto
