Malta Camp USA: Now Accepting Guests & Volunteers

04/30/2022

The American Association will sponsor Malta Camp USA, a summer camp for disabled young adults at Siena College in Loudonville, New York,  from June 19-24, 2022. It will consist of a five-day overnight program of daily and evening activities, including several day trips in the Hudson Valley and Catskills region.

The camp is designed to primarily serve Guests, who are physically and intellectually disabled young adults ages 21-40, a highly marginalized population. The Guests will be accompanied by 21-to-40-year-old volunteers who act as companions and offer one-on-one support, 24 hours a day, throughout the camp program.

Participants

  • Guests: Young adults (ages 21-40) who have physical and intellectual disabilities and are ambulatory (do not use a wheelchair) and self-sufficient (able to bathe/shower, use bathroom, and dress with little or no assistance).
  • Volunteers
    • Helpers: young adults (ages 21-40) who accompany Guests and offer one-on-one support.
    • Staff: Dedicated volunteers who ensure that the site and program’s logistical needs are met.
    • Medical Staff: Licensed medical professionals who assist in responding to medical needs of participants.
    • Note: All volunteers must be present for the full 5-day program.

Guest Sponsorship

Order Members and Auxiliary may propose a person to be a potential Guest. Members should not invite anyone to attend. Rather, they may sponsor a person with a disability as a candidate who will be evaluated by the Malta Camp USA Medical and Selection Committees.

  • Guests should be young adults (ages 21-40) who have physical and intellectual disabilities and are ambulatory (do not use a wheelchair) and self-sufficient (able to bathe/shower, use bathroom, and dress with little or no assistance).

Volunteers

There are opportunities to participate in Malta Camp USA as volunteer Staff or Helpers (companions).

  • Staff members serve together and coordinate in roles which make Malta Camp USA operate, and ensure its events, spirituality program, and activities are the very best we can offer our Guests.
  • Helpers accompany Guests 24-7, developing peer-to-peer relationships that transcend service and build up each Guest’s confidence and courage through affirmation and respect.
  • All volunteers ensure Guests receive the utmost care while providing them with opportunities for independence away from regular caretakers, parents, or institutional settings.

Note: Volunteers share triple or quadruple occupancy dormitory-style accommodations with Guests and fellow volunteers throughout the program. Opportunities to volunteer at Malta Camp USA are limited and a minimum of 25 spaces are reserved for young adults.
