The Malta Dental and Medical Clinic made news recently for its work serving the uninsured poor in Metropolitan Detroit.

Detroit Catholic, the digital news service of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit, profiled the Clinic in “Malta clinic to doctors, nurses: Detroit’s low-income patients need your help” (click here to see the article published on March 15, 2023).

Detroit Catholic noted that the Clinic wants to serve more patients in need: “In 2022, 281 volunteers gave more than 7,727 hours of service at the Malta Clinic, but more are needed this year as patient visit requests increase.”

A particular goal is expanding the Clinic’s medical services and hours. Dr. Edward J. Jelonek, Jr., KM, the Clinic’s medical director, recently obtained medical malpractice insurance for volunteer physicians and others under the Federal Tort Claims Act, removing a serious disincentive for volunteers, Detroit Catholic reported.

Also featured in the Detroit Catholic article were Clinic President Thomas Larabell, KM, and Marcia McBrien, DM, a member of the Clinic’s board of directors.

Founded by Michigan Area members, the Malta Clinic’s mission is to provide exceptional, compassionate, free health care to the uninsured of Metro Detroit. Since its founding in 2004, the Clinic has treated over 16,000 patients at no cost.
