Michigan Area’s Prospective Members Event Hosted by Archbishop Allen Vigneron, ChC

10/26/2023

The Michigan Area recently welcomed 40 potential new members to an evening reception at the Detroit Athletic Club. The Most Rev. Allen H. Vigneron, ChC, archbishop of the archdiocese of Detroit, served as host; 25 Dames, Knights, and auxiliaries also attended, welcoming and educating guests about the Order.
The October 18th event introduced prospective members to the Order of Malta, its history, and its charisms, including care of the poor and sick. Archbishop Vigneron said he first learned of the Order of Malta when he became bishop of Oakland, California, and was welcomed by members of the Order there. He was inspired to join the Order while on pilgrimage to Lourdes, where he saw Order of Malta members caring for malades. “[Membership in the Order] has been important to my spiritual life and my priesthood,” the archbishop said.

Incoming chair Andy Smith, KM, gave a brief presentation on the spirituality of the Order, explaining, “The goal is to help you get to Heaven.”
Other speakers included Barbara Wilson, DM, and Robert Wilson, KM, outgoing Michigan Area co-chairs, who discussed the area’s major works and activities. Thomas Larabell, KM, president of the Malta Dental and Medical Clinic, spoke about the Order’s work providing free dental and medical care, including the new Heart of Christ Clinic, slated to open in November.

Hon. Stephen Murphy, judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, explained how he was inspired to join the Michigan Area’s prison ministry. Judge Murphy, an auxiliary member, also explored the different levels of membership in the Order.

Prospective members who attended the reception will be contacted to invite them to future Michigan Area events and to assess their level of interest in joining the Order.

The Michigan Area’s next event is a “First Saturday,” set for Nov. 4 at St. Owen Church in Bloomfield Hills. Mass will be celebrated by Msgr. Michael LeFevre, ChM.
