A well-attended First Saturday, with 32 Dames, Knights, Auxiliaries, and guests, opened the month of the Sacred Heart for the Michigan Area.
The June 1 event, held at St. Owen Catholic Church in Bloomfield Hills, included the opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and recitation of the Rosary, to offer the full First Saturday devotion.
Peggy Stanton, DM, and Barbara Wilson, DM led the Rosary; confessions were heard by Msgr. Michael LeFevre, ChM, the Michigan Area’s chaplain and St. Owen’s pastor, who also celebrated Mass.
Readings at Mass were proclaimed by Auxiliary Sean Shriner and Carolyn Andree, DM. Stephanie Le, DM, and Associate Ky Cam offered the Prayers of the Faithful. Area Chair Andy Smith, KM, led the group in the Daily Prayer of the Order.
After Mass, a light breakfast was provided by Stephanie Le and Ky Cam, members of the Michigan Area’s Hospitality Ministry. Lectio Divina followed, led by Msgr. LeFevre.
As part of his monthly update, Andy Smith reported that the University of Notre Dame has invited the Michigan Area to participate in a July 7 on-campus Eucharistic procession, preceded by Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, as part of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage. The event is part of the Marian Route, the northern arm of the Pilgrimage, which will converge with the other three branches in Indianapolis on July 16 for the 10th National Eucharistic Congress. Also at the First Saturday event, John Juriga, KM, and Sean Shriner collected sandwiches and other supplies, later delivering 130 sack lunches to people living on the streets of Detroit as part of the Michigan Area’s “Into the Fire” ministry. The food was supplied by Thomas Larabell, KM, and Yvonne Larabell; Marcia McBrien, DM; Chris Rutkowski, KM and Auxiliary June Rutkowski; and Peggy Stanton, DM. Sandwiches were also provided by parishioners and grade school students of St. Edith Parish in Livonia.
The Area’s next First Saturday is set for July 6 at Old St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greektown, Detroit. After the First Saturday devotion, there will be an opportunity to join the “Into the Fire” ministry.
