Michigan Area holds July First Saturday, serves those living on the street

07/10/2024

Despite taking place over the Fourth of July holiday, the Michigan Area’s July First Saturday was well attended, with 23 Dames, Knights, Auxiliaries, and others participating.

The July 6 event, held at Old St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Detroit’s historic Greektown neighborhood, included the opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and recitation of the Rosary, to offer the full First Saturday devotion.

Confessions were heard by Msgr. Michael LeFevre, ChM, the Michigan Area’s chaplain, who also celebrated Mass. A highlight of the morning was Msgr. LeFevre imparting a special blessing to Stephanie Le, DM, and Associate Ky Cam for their 25th wedding anniversary.

Readings at Mass were proclaimed by David Hocker, Member in Formation, and Associate Nancy Cibor. Doug Nelson, KM and Donna Nelson, DM offered the Prayers of the Faithful. Area Chair Andy Smith, KM, led the group in the Daily Prayer of the Order at the conclusion of Mass.

After Mass, a light breakfast was provided by Doug and Donna Nelson, members of the Michigan Area’s Hospitality Ministry. Lectio Divina followed, led by Msgr. LeFevre.

Also at the First Saturday event, Sean Shriner, Member in Formation, collected 140 sandwiches and other supplies provided by Michigan Area members and parishioners at St. Edith’s in Livonia, as part of the Michigan Area’s “Into the Fire” ministry to Detroit’s homeless.  That afternoon, Sean and his wife, Jenna; Thomas Larabell, KM; Barbara Wilson, DM; and Robert Wilson, DM, distributed 120 sack lunches to people living on the streets of Detroit. The remaining 20 lunches were donated to Detroit Rescue Mission.

The Area’s next First Saturday is set for August 3 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Royal Oak. After the First Saturday devotion, there will be an opportunity to join the “Into the Fire” ministry.
