Organized by Michigan Area Hospitaller Kathleen Mastrangelo, DM, teams of Michigan Area volunteers work at the soup kitchen on the second and fourth Fridays of each month (and on fifth Fridays when they occur). Located in the People’s Community Church on Woodward Avenue, St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen serves about 30,000 lunches annually to the hungry and isolated in the community.
This service is not just about providing food; volunteers also offer each person who comes to the soup kitchen kindness and respect. Order of Malta members keep in mind St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s admonition to see “the presence of Jesus … in the distressing disguise of the poor.”
Volunteering at the July 11 lunch service were Dr. Lourdes Andaya, DM; Associate Rana Jamil; John Juriga, KM; Chris Rutkowski, KM; Mark Thut; Mary Thut; Barbara Wilson, DM; and Robert Wilson, KM.
