Michigan Area’s August 2 “Into the Fire” takes food, prayers to Detroit streets

08/09/2025

The Michigan Area’s “Into the Fire” ministry, organized by John Juriga, KM; and Sean Shriner, KM, serves Detroit’s homeless on the streets. With food and clothing donated by Michigan Area members and others, “Into the Fire” volunteers drive the Malta Mobile Ministries Van into Detroit’s poorest and most devastated areas, seeking those in need. In addition to performing these corporal works of mercy, the volunteers also pray with the people they meet, upon request.

The ministry typically takes place on the first Saturday of each month, following the Michigan’s Area’s “First Saturday” observance, but operates at other times, depending on volunteers’ availability.

Following the Michigan Area’s August 2 First Saturday (see “Michigan Area’s August First Saturday held at St. Mary’s of Royal Oak”), an “Into the Fire” team distributed 135 sack lunches in multiple locations in Detroit. An additional 35 sandwiches were donated to the Detroit Rescue Mission. The food was provided by Michigan Area members and members of St. Edith Catholic Parish in Livonia.

The August 2 group included Sean Shriner and his mother, Associate Andrea McKenna; Denise Greenway, Member in Formation; volunteer Bob Joseph; Thomas Larabell, KM; and Michigan Area Chair Andy Smith, KM.
