Michigan Area represented at Metro Detroit legal community’s annual “Red Mass”

10/09/2025

The Michigan Area was well represented at the annual Red Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Jesuit Church in Detroit, held on Sept. 23.

The Red Mass has been a tradition in the Metro Detroit legal community for 113 years, attended by numerous judges, lawyers, law professors, and law students. The University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law, which is adjacent to Sts. Peter and Paul, began hosting the Red Mass in 1912.

The Red Mass tradition dates back at least as early as 1243, when Pope Innocent IV held a Red Mass to mark the coming term of the Ecclesial Judicial Court, asking for the Holy Spirit to grant wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, and strength. The color red signifies the Holy Spirit and martyrdom.

The traditional procession of judges, law professors, and other dignitaries included Michigan Area members Hon. Maura Corrigan, Associate, former Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court; attorney Marcia McBrien, DM; Hon. Michael Riordan, KM, judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals; and Peggy Stanton, DM.
