In 2025, Michigan Area members, friends, and family prepared and served about 3,000 meals to guests of St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen in Detroit.
Located in the People’s Community Church, St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen serves the hungry, isolated, and lonely in the community. Michigan Area members, organized by Michigan Area Hospitaller Kathleen Mastrangelo, DM, staff the soup kitchen on the second and fourth Fridays of each month (and on fifth Fridays when they occur). Working under the direction of St. Leo’s kitchen manager Dominic French, the volunteers slice, dice, season, and saute to provide about 100 hot, delicious meals to guests at each lunch service.

At the December 12 lunch service, the Michigan Area team included Kathleen Mastrangelo; Dr. Lourdes Andaya, DM; Denise Greenway, Member in Formation; volunteer Eva Gilbert; Associate Rana Jamil; Mark Thut, Member in Formation, and his wife Mary Thut.
St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen provides lunch every Tuesday through Friday, primarily to low-income residents of Detroit, Highland Park, and Hamtramck.

In 2026, the Michigan Area will continue to provide meals and hospitality to our lords, the poor and sick, at St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen. The next service date is January 9.
