NYC Area Celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and World Day of Prayer for the Sick

02/13/2026

On Wednesday, February 11th, the NYC Area and the Subpriory of Our Lady of Lourdes welcomed around 100 guests as we celebrated the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes and World Day of Prayer for the Sick with an Anointing Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Father Joe Cavoto, OFM, ChM celebrated the liturgy and candlelight procession.

We were honored to have in attendance Malades and Caregivers from the Lourdes Pilgrimage and residents from Mary Manning Walsh Nursing Home, with readings by our Malades. Also in attendance were Peter McGuire, KMOb, Regent for the Subpriory of Our Lady of Lourdes and Rory Kelleher, GCMOb, Secretary General. In his sermon, Father Cavoto discussed how this feast reminds us of the essence of our vocation to the Order of Malta, and “that the greatest reminder is the Cross.” “On this World Day of the Sick, Our Lady of Lourdes reminds us God hasn’t forgotten us; that we each, in our own way, imitate Christ, the divine Samaritan.” At the conclusion of the liturgy, there was a candlelight procession to a side altar of Our Lady.

Following the Mass, the attendees shared fellowship and good cheer during a reception in St. Francis’ Damiano Hall. This included delicious fried chicken that was graciously donated by Melba’s Restaurant in Harlem, arancini and meatballs graciously donated by Joanne’s Trattoria, and special donuts celebrating the installation of our new Archbishop.
