For some, Friday the 13th is associated with bad luck – but for the hungry in Detroit at St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen, the Michigan Area brought an early Valentine in the form of a delicious hot lunch.
Located in the People’s Community Church, St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen serves about 30,000 lunches annually to the hungry, isolated, and lonely in the community. Organized by Michigan Area Hospitaller Kathleen Mastrangelo, DM, teams of Michigan Area volunteers work at the soup kitchen on the second and fourth Fridays of each month (and on fifth Fridays when they occur). The Michigan Area teams work under the direction of St. Leo’s kitchen manager, chef Dominic French.

Preparing a hot lunch from scratch were Tracey Frattarelli, DM; Denise Greenway, Member in Formation; Associate Rana Jamil; Stephanie Le, DM, and Associate Ky Cam; Kathleen Mastrangelo; and Bryce Parker.
The menu included chicken, corn on the cob, and macaroni and cheese. The meal concluded with cupcakes specially decorated for St. Valentine’s Day.
