Description |
The” Order of Malta NYC Junior Committee” was formed as an umbrella group for members, auxiliaries, and new volunteers under the age of 40 to facilitate community, spiritual development, and involvement in the works of the Order among the young adult age group. As such, there is much overlap with the works of the Order organized by the auxiliary and long-standing activities in which members are involved. |
Activities Members Are Involved In |
The “Junior Committee” organizes on its own a monthly “Malta Walks” led by Francesca Tempesta, DM. Each 3rd Tuesday of the month, a group assembles at Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral in lower Manhattan and prepares sandwich bags. They then seek out homeless persons on the street to share with them some food, conversation and friendship. The goal of these encounters is not just to provide some small piece of food, but to acknowledge homeless persons as brothers and sisters by attempting to engage them in conversation. The Junior Committee also facilitates involvement in other activities by spreading the word among its community through social media. Other activities that Junior Committee members are encouraged to participate in include: serving dinner at the Dwelling Place (monthly organized by Thomas O’Rourke, KM, of the Auxiliary), weekly mass service and holiday parties at Terrance Cardinal Cooke (TCC), formation of the US Team at the Order of Malta International Summer Camp for Disabled Youth. Lastly, the Junior Committee helps foster community among younger members by organizing a social after each 1st Monday monthly Area Mass. |
