Members of the Order of Malta are invited to join us for Solemn Vespers and Benediction at the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral with Very Rev. Enrique Salvo, ChM. We will celebrate this ancient feast, commemorating three events; the finding of the True Cross by St. Helena, the dedication of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in AD 337, and the restoration of the True Cross to Jerusalem in AD 629 by Emperor Heraclius after it had fallen into the hands of the Persian Emperor in the Sassanian conquest of Jerusalem.
With the setting by Mozart, some rarely heard Italian hymns, and antiphons in Latin, the vespers will harken back to the vibrant life of the Basilica in the mid-19th century, when it served as the cathedral church of New York and center of a bustling neighborhood of immigrants, where vespers like these would regularly be celebrated on the afternoons of Sundays and feast days.
Members are asked to arrive at 6:15 PM to vest. Chaplains are invited to assist in choir dress.
To RSVP, please send an email to Michael Espiritu, MD, KM.
