The Michigan Area continued its First Saturday devotion, with 40 Dames, Knights, auxiliaries, and guests, on March 2nd at the Grosse Pointe Academy in Grosse Pointe Farms.
Hospitaller Kathleen Mastrangelo, DM, led the Rosary. Msgr. Michael LeFevre, ChM, the Michigan Area’s chaplain, heard confessions and celebrated Mass. The Mass readings were proclaimed by Patrick Fabian, KM, and candidate-in-formation Kathy Stark; Donna Nelson, DM, and Douglas Nelson, KM, offered the Prayers of the Faithful. The Nelsons, who are members of the Michigan Area’s Hospitality Ministry, also provided breakfast after Mass. Lectio Divina followed, led by Msgr. LeFevre.
Area Chair Andy Smith, KM, reminded members of upcoming activities, including a special March 3 Mass with relics of St. Jean de Brebeuf at the Chapel of the North American Martyrs, University of Detroit High School and Academy. On March 16th, Michigan Area members will also meet in Detroit for an informal “Third Saturday,” attending Mass at historic St. Hedwig Church, followed by dinner at McShane’s Irish Pub in Corktown.
At the March 2nd event, Patrick Jones, KM, and John Juriga, KM, collected from Malta members 125 sandwiches, plus bottled water, chips, and snack bars, for the “Into the Fire” ministry, which takes food, clothing, and other supplies to Detroit’s homeless. A group from the First Saturday event then joined Patrick and John in front of the Center for the Works of Mercy in Detroit to distribute sack lunches to people living on the street.
The Area’s next First Saturday event is the Area’s annual retreat on April 6th, with retreat master Fr. Gerald Murray, ChM, author and EWTN commentator, at the Solanus Casey Center in Detroit.
