Michigan Area members serve up food and fellowship at St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen in Detroit

07/17/2024

On July 12th, Michigan Area members served up nourishment for bodies and souls at St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen, housed in the Center for the Works of Mercy in Detroit.

On the second and fourth Fridays of each month (and on fifth Fridays when they occur), Michigan Area members, supervised by master chef Burt Dearing, prepare a hot lunch from scratch for the many poor and homeless in Detroit who flock to the soup kitchen. At the July 12th soup kitchen, the Michigan Area group cooked and served over 200 meals.

This effort is organized by Michigan Area Hospitaller Kathleen Mastrangelo, DM. Participants on July 12 included Dr. Lourdes Andaya, DM; Dale Chiara, KM, and Patty Chiara; Tom Larabell, KM; Chris Rutkowski, KM, and Auxiliary June Rutkowski; and Barbara Wilson, DM, and Robert Wilson, KM.

In addition to providing hot meals, Michigan Area members pack “to go” bags for soup kitchen guests to take with them.

More than just providing physical sustenance, Michigan members also offer a listening ear, spending time with their guests over lunch. Many of these guests lack access to health care and health insurance, so the lunches are a good opportunity to educate guests about the Michigan Area’s Malta Dental and Medical Clinic, also housed in the Center for the Works of Mercy.
