Heeding the Order’s charism to serve the poor, on October 10th, Michigan Area members prepared 125 lunches-to-go at St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen in Detroit.
Located in the People’s Community Church, St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen serves about 30,000 lunches annually to the hungry, isolated, and lonely in the community. Organized by Michigan Area Hospitaller Kathleen Mastrangelo, DM, teams of Michigan Area volunteers work at the soup kitchen on the second and fourth Fridays of each month (and on fifth Fridays when they occur).
Usually the Michigan Area teams prepare hot lunches from scratch under the direction of St. Leo’s kitchen manager, chef Dominic French. But with People’s Community Church needing to use the kitchen to prepare for a concert that evening, the Michigan Area team instead packed and distributed bag lunches.
An added personal touch was that each bag was decorated and partially filled by students from St. Paul on the Lake Catholic School in Grosse Pointe Farms. The Order of Malta volunteers prepared and added more sandwiches, as well as fruit and snacks.
Volunteering at the lunch service with Kathleen were her husband, Associate Vince Mastrangelo; Dr. Lourdes Andaya, DM; David Closs, KM, and Noel Closs, DM; and Mark Thut.
