Janet S. York Correctional Institution is Connecticut’s only state prison for women, located in Niantic. The facility opened in its current form in October, 1994, and houses a maximum of 1500 at a range of security levels from minimum to super maximum. Members visit the facility on the first Saturday morning of the month to attend Mass with over 70 female inmates. Members may serve as greeters and as Eucharistic Ministers. Members also organize and run ACTS (Adoration, Community, Theology) Retreats lead bible studies, and help inmates prepare for Baptism and Confirmation. |
Activities Members Are Involved In |
Members attend monthly Mass and worship together with female inmates. There is time for visiting and friendship. Members arrive early and assist in setting up for Mass, and may serve as greeters and Eucharistic Ministers. They may encourage participation in the sacrament of confession. Members lead the weekend ACTS retreats with talks, reflections, small group sharing followed by Mass and other spirit-filled activities. |
