Description |
Members, student volunteers, and a local Deacon from the Kent State University Parish Newman Center meet with juvenile residents of the Juvenile Portage Geauga County Detention Center. The Detention Center is a 46 bed coed detention facility administered by a Joint Board of Trustees made up of representatives from Portage and Geauga County. During weekly visits on Fridays around 7PM, the ministry includes preparing for and participating in a Communion service. The Deacon leads the service with help from members, students, and residents. |
Activities Members Are Involved In |
Members and students proceed past security checkpoints and bring in all missals and other reading material, including Malta Bibles and prayer book for the liturgy. They help prepare the altar and set up chairs in the gathering room. Before the start of the liturgy, time is available for conversation and fellowship. The readings follow the liturgy for the upcoming Sunday. At the end of the liturgy, residents are encouraged to think about the readings, the shared reflection, and bring them into their daily lives. |
