On a bitterly cold December afternoon, Michigan Area members went to the streets of Detroit to serve the poor with food, clothing, friendship, and prayer.
Organized by John Juriga, KM, and Sean Shriner, KM, the “Into the Fire” ministry serves those living on the streets. With food and clothing donated by Michigan Area members and others, “Into the Fire” volunteers drive the Malta Mobile Ministries Van into Detroit’s poorest and most devastated areas. The team seeks the homeless where they live, including alleys and abandoned buildings. In addition to performing these corporal works of mercy, the volunteers also pray with the people they meet, upon request.

Following the Michigan Area’s December 6 Advent event, an “Into the Fire” team distributed bagged lunches and warm clothing in multiple locations in Detroit.
John Juriga was accompanied by Michigan Area Hospitaller Kathleen Mastrangelo, DM; Chris Rutkowski, KM, and June Rutkowski, DM. Michigan Area Chair Andy Smith, KM, and Andrea Smith, DM, assisted with organizing supplies and packing lunch bags.

Before setting out, the group recited the Association’s new Service Prayer. (See “At Michigan Area’s Advent Mass, Christ’s third coming’ heralded; Order’s Service Prayer debuts.”)
“Into the Fire” operates every first Saturday and on other days when volunteers and supplies are available.
