Bishop Barres Celebrates the Red Mass for the Long Island Area

10/09/2025

On Tuesday, October 7th, Bishop John Barres, Conventual Chaplain ad honorem of the Long Island Area, celebrated the Red Mass for the local community. This solemn liturgy, traditionally offered to invoke the guidance of the Holy Spirit upon those serving in the legal profession, brought together members of the Order and distinguished guests in prayer and reflection.

The Red Mass traces its origins to at least 1243, when Pope Innocent IV first celebrated it to mark the opening of the Ecclesial Judicial Court’s term. The Mass calls upon the Holy Spirit to bestow wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, and strength upon judges, lawyers, legislators, and public officials. The color red, worn by clergy during the liturgy, symbolizes both the fire of the Holy Spirit and the sacrifice of martyrdom—reminding all present of the profound responsibility and moral courage required in the pursuit of justice.

Bishop Barres’ celebration of the Red Mass was a meaningful continuation of this centuries-old tradition, reaffirming the Order’s commitment to faith, service, and the pursuit of truth.
