It’s been 11 years since Bob, KM and Sue, DM Sameth started the cornerstone ministry “Food Backpacks” in partnership with Father English Center, a part of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Paterson. On the last Wednesday of each month, Knights, Dames, and volunteers prepare 135 bags of food to help families facing food insecurity—especially during the final weekend before paychecks and benefits arrive at the start of the month.

Over time, the ministry has evolved; for example, the Malta Mobile Ministries Van now delivers food bags directly to Paterson. A few years ago, Sue and Bob also began purchasing books for every child each month. Thanks to First Book, we purchase age-appropriate books at a discount; some are bilingual while others are in English. The hope is to encourage reading and help children build their own little libraries—an added gesture to show we care.
