Our Affiliate Corps—volunteers of all backgrounds and religions who serve alongside Knights and Dames—are essential to carrying forward our over 900-year-old mission to protect the faith and serve the poor and the sick through hands-on service.
Every month, our Affiliates walk the streets of Manhattan distributing meals and essential supplies to those experiencing homelessness. They bring joy and companionship to children and adults with profound disabilities at Mother Cabrini Hospital. They provide spiritual and social support to elderly residents in nursing care. They stock food pantries, support vulnerable mothers, and help organize events that sustain our mission.
The NYC Area Affiliate Corps is made up of three groups:
Many Affiliates live in NYC or the surrounding area and travel into the city to give their time and talent to our mission. All participate fully in our monthly volunteer activities and community life.
We welcome new Affiliates year-round and host an annual reception each May for prospective Knights and Dames. To learn more, contact our Affiliate Chair, Michael Smilek, KM, at nycaux@orderofmaltaamerican.org.
Do I need to be Catholic to volunteer?
No! Our Volunteer Auxiliary program welcomes people of all faiths who share our commitment to serving the sick and poor.
What’s the time commitment?
Affiliates participate as their schedules allow. Many attend monthly Mass and one volunteer activity per month, though you’re welcome to do more.
Is there a cost to join?
No membership dues for Affiliates. We only ask for your time, talent, and heart for service.
Can Affiliates become full members of the Order?
Yes! Many Affiliates eventually discern a call to full membership and are invested as Knights or Dames. The program is an excellent way to explore this vocation.
Do I need any special skills or experience?
No special skills required—just an open heart and willingness to serve. We provide training and support for all our activities.
Where are activities located?
Our works take place across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Specific locations are shared with Affiliates via email.
