On Wednesday, July 31 and Wednesday, August 7, members of the New York City Area gathered on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre to escort senior ArchCare residents to a performance of The Wiz.
Volunteers welcomed the seniors to Broadway as they stepped off the ArchCare bus. Led by Eric Vitale, KM, and Michael Smilek, AUX, volunteers paired up with seniors and helped them enter the theater. The seniors were happy to have help navigating the space, especially those who used wheelchairs.
Guests laughed and cheered at the vibrant performance. Many of the seniors had never seen a Broadway show before, and it had been decades since some visited Manhattan. Volunteers accompanied the seniors for the entire show, and ArchCare nurses stood by for medical needs.
At intermission, guests and volunteers mingled, took photos, and enjoyed concessions courtesy of ArchCare. By the end of the show, all had come together in fellowship and made new friendships. Volunteers returned to the ArchCare buses with the seniors, who expressed their excitement for next year’s Broadway outing.
Our special thanks and gratitude to ArchCare CEO Scott LaRue, KM, who made the annual event possible. Thanks also to Derek Dunbar from ArchCare and all the nurses and nurses aids who helped the Malta Volunteers and their guests.
