On Monday, October 7th, members of the NYC Area gathered at St. Patrick’s Cathedral Lady Chapel to celebrate Mass commemorating the Feast of our Founder, Blessed Gerard. October 7th itself is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, which also has strong ties to the Order.
In 1571, Saint (then Pope) Pius V called for all the European faithful to pray the Rosary for the protection of Europe, as it faced imminent invasion from the Ottoman Empire.
Prayers were answered on October 7, at the Battle of Lepanto, in which the Order was part of the Holy League fleet which achieved one of history’s greatest naval victories. In thanksgiving for the intercession of Our Lady, Pius V established the Feast of Our Lady of Victory (now Our Lady of the Rosary).
Mass was presided by Fr. Zach Presutti, SJ, founder of Thrive for Life Prison Ministry, which has begun a collaboration with the NYC Area to promote its works beyond the prison walls for those who are justice impacted.
Joining Fr. Presutti were our Chaplains Fr. Enrique Salvo and Msgr. Douglas Mathers, as well as Fr. Sean Suckiel, a long time supporter of the Order’s work in Lourdes.
Following the Mass, our Members, Affiliates and guests enjoyed a wine and cheese reception on the patio of the St. Patrick’s Parish House.
